Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at the front line of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak response. They have faced great risks to both physical and mental health. We aimed to assess the psychological effect of COVID-19 among ancillary hospital staff. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 267 on-duty ancillary hospital staff using a semi-structured questionnaire to assess their psychological status and risk perception. In addition, their knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) and risk perception were also assessed. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was used to screen for psychological distress. Results: Among 267 participants, the mean (±SD) age was 33.5 (7.6) years. The majority knew about the symptoms of COVID-19 (88.4%), droplet spread (99.3%), and the importance of isolation (99.3%). About 35.2% were worried about infecting family members, while 26.2% were worried about colleagues at the frontline. Only 38.9% of them had a good knowledge score. Participants with high school and above education level had significantly good knowledge about COVID-19 (OR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.17- 3.39) than those with primary school or below. Being female (OR 1.99; 95% CI 1.17-3.39) and working with COVID-19 patients (OR 3.88, 95% CI 1.77-8.47, P = 0.001) was associated with psychological distress. Conclusion: The ancillary hospital staff had insufficient knowledge regarding the risk factors of COVID-19 but possessed positive attitudes and practices. Continued health education and appropriate psychological interventions may improve understanding and reduce psychological distress.

Background and Aims: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the psychosocial, behavioral, and sleep impact of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic on healthcare workers (HCWs) at a tertiary-care hospital in Northern India. Materials and Methods: An online questionnaire including three psychological scales - peritraumatic distress inventory (PDI), insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Depression anxiety stress scale was circulated among the HCWs at a tertiary-care hospital in Northern India. Results: Three hundred and ninety-six HCWs (Mean age standard deviation: 34.8 [8.1%] years; 181 females) responded. Place of posting was active COVID area (27.2%), reserve active COVID team (23.2%), trained reserve pool (29.5%), and non-COVID areas (19.9%). More than half of all the respondents (51%) had abnormal PDI score (>14) with a propensity to develop posttraumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, there was a significantly higher prevalence of abnormal PDI scores in those involved in active COVID care units (74%) versus non-COVID care unit (24%, P = 0.001). More than 60% of all the respondents had abnormal ISI score suggesting significant insomnia. Stress was seen in 71% of all the respondents while 82% were anxious and 77% participants had depressive symptoms. Hence, the psychological morbidity among the HCWs was high. Conclusion: Our study found a much higher prevalence of peritraumatic distress, insomnia, anxiety, stress, and depression among the HCWs, more so in those working in COVID areas. Factors indigenous to Indian population in terms of psychological health must be studied and addressed to reduce this psychological morbidity since the battle with COVID is long.

PURPOSE: Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (CLIA) is high throughput, rapid diagnostic test which has recently come up for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigen. The present study evaluated performance of CLIA antigen test in nasopharyngeal swab samples stored at different temperatures for 7 days to simulate the transport conditions and transit time across the country from remote peripheral laboratories to central facilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Limit of detection (LOD), sensitivity and specificity of VITROS® SARS-CoV-2 antigen assay was determined using Real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (rRT-PCR) confirmed SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative samples. To detect the effect of storage temperatures on VITROS ®SARS-CoV-2 antigen results, samples were stored at 4 â€‹°C, 25 â€‹°C & 37 â€‹°C for 7 days followed by detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen and compared with N-gene rRT-PCR. RESULTS: The VITROS® SARS-CoV-2 antigen test was found to have a sensitivity and specificity of 78.9% and 100% respectively with high sensitivity of 88.1% for samples with Ct â€‹< â€‹30. The LOD of VITROS assay was equivalent to 3800 copies of RNA per reactions as compared to 72 copies per reaction for rRT-PCR. We observed that more than 80% of samples with <30 Ct values could be detected by VITROS SARS-CoV-2 antigen assay at day 7 even when stored at 37 â€‹°C. For samples with Ct values between 26 and 30, on day 7 the positivity rate of N-antigen at 4 â€‹°C was 90.9% and 37 â€‹°C was 63.6%. CONCLUSIONS: CLIA testing can be carried out for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 N-protein in NP-swab samples transported in cold chain even with 7 days transit time, particularly for Ct â€‹< â€‹30 samples which represents cases with higher transmissibility. As drop in positivity for VITROS assay was lower as compared to rRT-PCR on day 7 in cold chain-maintained samples, the assay can be useful to screen samples received from remote peripheral areas before performing rRT-PCR.

As of March 31, 2021, the Coronavirus COVID-19 was affecting 219 countries and territories worldwide, with approximately 129,574,017 confirmed cases and 2,830,220 death cases. Social isolation is the most reliable way to deal with this pandemic situation. Motivated by this notion, this paper proposes a deep learning-based technique for automating the task of monitoring social distancing using surveillance cameras. To separate humans from the background, the proposed system employs object detection models based on F-RCNN (Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks) and YOLO (You Only Look Once) algorithms. In the COVID-19 environment, these models track the percentage of people who violate social distancing norms on a daily basis. The authors compared the performance of both models in experimental work using the MS COCO dataset. Many tests were carried out, and we discovered that YOLOv3 demonstrated efficient performance with balanced FPS (frames per second).

Being acknowledged as “the new superfood” of the future, they are a cardinal component of human diet for boosting health status and well being. Mushrooms are endowed with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, prebiotic, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities, upholding a great therapeutic potential and a huge spectrum of clinical applications. The wide ranges of bioactive compounds including polysaccharides, polysaccharides protein complexes, peptides and proteins, terpenoids and phenolic compounds have been reported from diverse groups of mushroom. Laden with a wealth of nutrients and innumerable biomolecules of therapeutic worth, they are internationally appreciated and envisaged as world's largest untapped resources of dietary supplements. In the recent years, owing to significant healthier lifestyle changes, dietary practices of people and consumers opting for immunity enhancing supplements especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the yearning for mushroom based nutraceuticals and functional foods is on rise. This review gives comprehensive details on the biodiversity of mushrooms, its nutritional and medicinal importance, secondary metabolites especially of nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical potential, and their role as bioactive agents and application in preparing mushroom based value-added products.

Background Regulated breathing facilitates ventilation and reduces breathlessness. However, the effect of Yogic breathing on patients with COVID remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two breathing protocols, i.e., short breathing technique (SBT) and long duration breathing technique (LBDT). Methods Three groups including COVID-positive patients, COVID-recovered patients, and healthcare workers (HCWs) were included in the study and segregated into Yoga and control groups. SBT was administered to COVID-positive patients. Both SBT and LBDT were administered to COVID-recovered patients and HCWs. A total of 18 biochemical parameters, a 6-min walk test (6MWT), and a 1-min sit-stand test (1MSST) were assessed on 0th, 7th, and 15th days, where biochemical parameters were the primary outcome. Pre-post estimation of neuropsychological parameters (nine questionnaires) and heart rate variability (HRV) were carried out. The paired t-test or Wilcoxon rank test was applied for pre-post comparison and the Student's t-test or Mann–Whitney U test was used for group comparison. Repeated measures test was applied for data recorded at three time points. Results A significant elevation in white blood cell (WBC) count was observed in COVID-positive intervention (p < 0.001) and control groups (p = 0.003), indicating no role of intervention on change in WBC number. WBC count (p = 0.002) and D-dimer (p = 0.002) significantly decreased in the COVID-recovered intervention group. D-dimer was also reduced in HCWs practicing Yogic breathing as compared to controls (p = 0.01). D-dimer was the primary outcome, which remained below 0.50 μg/ml (a cutoff value to define severity) in the COVID-positive yoga group (CYG) and decreased in the COVID-recovered yoga group (RYG) and the HCW yoga group (HYG) after intervention. A 6-min walk test (6MWT) showed an increase in distance covered among the COVID-positive patients (p = 0.01) and HCWs (p = 0.002) after intervention. The high-frequency power (p = 0.01) was found to be reduced in the COVID-positive intervention group. No significant change in neuropsychological parameters was observed. Conclusion Yogic breathing lowered D-dimer, which is helpful in reducing thrombosis and venous thromboembolism in patients with COVID-19 besides lowering the chances of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia in vaccinated individuals. The breathing intervention improved exercise capacity in mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. Further studies can show if such breathing techniques can influence immunity-related genes, as reported recently in a study. We suggest that Yogic breathing may be considered an integrative approach for the management of patients with COVID. Being a developing country with a large population with high density, India was on high alert for the COVID-19 pandemic. India overcame much difficulty from the first wave, but was soon after smacked by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to its contiguous nature, people were advised to stay in their home, but some people have to continue their work to maintain public health, law and order and provide necessary services. Sanitary workers are one of them;they maintain cleanliness and sanitise public places, communities, towns and cities to control the COVID-19 spread. It is essential to know and understand their situation in such a problematic condition of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper will elaborate on their social, occupational, and living conditions and possible relation with COVID-19. The author collected quantitative data through a cross-sectional study in four towns (Ladwa, Indri, Thanesar and Radaur) of Haryana in 2017. Quantitative and qualitative data had collected from sanitary workers through structured interview and observation. During fieldwork, the researcher lived with the community and observed closely. Results show that their working conditions are risky, working timings and duration also risky, alcohol and tobacco use is high, protective gears are not available to them, job status primarily contractual, no or low educational standard, health conditions are down and the standard of living is low & living situation are congested. The results indicate that they are at high risk of COVID-19 infection, to develop severe acute illness from COVID-19 and community spread. While their sanitary workers come into contact with different kinds of waste and surfaces, so their chance of infection is high because COVID-19 can survive on any surface. Their occupational, educational, social, health, living standards and living conditions make them vulnerable to developing a severe acute illness, leading to a high death rate and community spread. Therefore we need to take some essential steps in this regard.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a life-threatening respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2), a novel human coronavirus. COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by World Health Organization in March 2020 for its continuous and rapid spread worldwide. Rapidly emerging COVID-19 epicenters and mutants of concerns have created mammoth chaos in healthcare sectors across the globe. With over 185 million infections and approximately 4 million deaths globally, COVID-19 continues its unchecked spread despite all mitigation measures. Until effective and affordable antiretroviral drugs are made available and the population at large is vaccinated, timely diagnosis of the infection and adoption of COVID-appropriate behavior remains major tool available to curtail the still escalating COVID-19 pandemic. This review provides an updated overview of various techniques of COVID-19 testing in human samples and also discusses, in brief, the biochemical composition and mode of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2. Technological advancement in various molecular, serological and immunological techniques including mainly the reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), CRISPR, lateral flow assays (LFAs), and immunosensors are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION: Caregivers of children with comorbidities suffer from various psychological problems. We envisage more such complications during this COVID-19 pandemic. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study to assess psychological issues in caregivers of children with kidney diseases, admitted during lockdown period in India was done. Psychological tools including Peritraumatic Distress Inventory (PDI), Insomnia Severity Index, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS II), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and a new "COVID Stress Survey Questionnaire" were used. Standard statistical analysis using SPSS Statistic 23 (IBM SPSS Statistics, New York, United States) was done. RESULTS: Forty-seven caregivers (33 mothers; 14 fathers) were included. Of these, 33 (70.2%) experienced psychological distress. On PANAS, 45 (95.7%) scored below cut off on a positive affect and 42 (89.4%) scored above cut off on a negative effect. The DASS II score revealed that 38 (80.9%) reported mild stress, 23 (48.9%) severe anxiety, and 37 (78.7%) had moderate depression. Upper middle socioeconomic status caregivers reported more insomnia. Further, parents of children with acute kidney injury (AKI) or prolonged hospital stay scored higher on subjective distress and aversive feelings. CONCLUSION: We observed an alarming level of distress, insomnia, and anxiety among caregivers, more so in upper middle socioeconomic status, children with AKI and prolonged hospital stay. We suggest due counseling should be done.

BACKGROUND: Waiting for results is often associated with a state of anxiety and restlessness. The current study is intended to study the emotional state of people waiting for their results after undergoing COVID-19 testing. METHODS: A descriptive study was done among 140 participants enrolled by simple random technique over a period of 1 month in May 2020. The participants who gave sample for COVID-19 were assessed for their emotional state at two stages - after giving sample and during the waiting period before telling results to them. A self-designed questionnaire focusing on the demographics and emotional state was submitted by the participants distributed to them as Google Forms. Wilcoxon signed-rank test and McNemar test were used to compare the statistical change in emotions over a period of time. RESULTS: Around 63.6% and 68.8% of the participants had neutral emotional state after giving sample and before announcement of results, respectively. The mean score of agreement with decision to test was 9 ± 1.6 and discomfort related to testing was 4.6 ± 2.6 on Likert scale of 1-10. A statistically significant difference (P = 0.01) was observed in mean response for "something can be done to help" after giving sample (1.6 ± 0.4) and before announcement of results (1.8 ± 0.3). CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing testing for COVID-19 undergo psychological turmoil and use various coping methods. Patients endorsed various suggestions including quicker generation of results, environmental changes and counselling services to help them cope better. Incorporating these suggestions may improve the diagnostic process in patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Most countries around the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there are quantitative studies on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on health-care professionals and other population groups, there are few studies that have evaluated the experiences of patients in the initial phases of the pandemic. AIM: This study aims to conduct a qualitative study assessing the experiences of the patients in isolation and quarantine in the initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODOLOGY: The present study was a qualitative study through telephonic interviews with patients in isolation and quarantine due to COVID-19 from April 4 to 12, 2020. Patients in isolation had confirmed COVID-19 and were mandatorily admitted in specially designated COVID hospitals. Patients in quarantine were suspected to have COVID-19 due to symptoms or contact with confirmed patients with COVID-19. RESULTS: The experiences could be classified as having psychological impact, interpersonal impact, social impact, behavioral changes and impact on occupational aspects. The experience was predominantly unpleasant and characterized by anxiety, stigma, ostracization, guilt, and worry about the future. CONCLUSION: The experiences of the individuals in both the groups emphasize the importance of addressing psychological stressors. It could be concluded that individuals and their families would accordingly benefit from effective interventions to deal with the negative experiences they have been through due to the present pandemic.

Social stigma is the spoilation of the social image of an individual, which leads to the social disapproval of the individual by the community. Patients of many diseases like HIV, deafness, and reproductive disorders often face social disproval. Head & neck cancer survivors perceived stigma due to the mutilation that occurred after surgical treatment procedures. The novel coronavirus is a recently emerged zoonotic viral agent that affects the respiratory system of humans. Following its outbreak from the Wuhan city of China, the COVID-19 spreaded fiercely around the globe, forming a pandemic. Since COVID-19 is a contagious disease with no available treatment, social distancing is considered as the best strategy to prevent the geometric spread of infection. With the social distancing model, the head & neck cancer survivors along with the various other stakeholders perceived stigma being a high-risk group for COVID-19 infection. As the pool of caregivers is diminished due to pandemic, head & neck cancer survivors face increased social isolation and perceived stigma in asking for help from relatives. At the time of the pandemic, social support is critical to fighting against the disease. Social distancing should be maintained along with communication with the patients through calls, text, and online social platforms. It is not wise to stigmatize disease as, in that case, patients who are infected with the disease will try to hide it and avoid seeking medical care. With the promotion of social distancing, it is crucial to convey awareness regarding not to stigmatize the disease.

There are many solutions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and one of the most effective solutions is wearing a face mask. Almost everyone is wearing face masks at all times in public places during the coronavirus pandemic. This encourages us to explore face mask detection technology to monitor people wearing masks in public places. Most recent and advanced face mask detection approaches are designed using deep learning. In this article, two state-of-the-art object detection models, namely, YOLOv3 and faster R-CNN are used to achieve this task. The authors have trained both the models on a dataset that consists of images of people of two categories that are with and without face masks. This work proposes a technique that will draw bounding boxes (red or green) around the faces of people, based on whether a person is wearing a mask or not, and keeps the record of the ratio of people wearing face masks on the daily basis. The authors have also compared the performance of both the models i.e., their precision rate and inference time.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate psychological distress of persons in quarantine and compare the same with a group of persons, who are currently in lockdown. Methodology Forty-four persons in quarantine and 45 subjects currently in lockdown were evaluated on Depression Anxiety Stress Scale II. Results About three-fourth (77.3%) of the participants in the quarantine group and one-third (37.8%) in the comparator group had depression. About one fourth (22.7%) in the quarantine group and one-third (35.6%) in the lockdown group had anxiety. Conclusion The present study suggests that lockdown and being in quarantine are associated with significantly higher psychiatric morbidity, especially anxiety.
